Have you ever thought about what a web page is? I mean, what it really is? Some people think of a web page as a visual medium—an aesthetically pleasing experience which may or may not contain information that’s of interest to the viewer. Other people think of a web page as a document that may be presented to readers in anaesthetically pleasing way. From a technical point of view, the documentinterpretation is more appropriate. As you’re probably aware, Phar is now a core extension in PHP 5.3. This is great news for Greg Beaver, the project lead; he has worked incredibly hard to make the extension do all that could possibly be asked of it, and more. Marcus Börger and myself also work on the extension, but we’ve been left blinking at the speed of development more than once. At the time of writing, Greg had just added OpenSSL signing support to Phar, which means that the only thing left on the immediate TODO is performance optimization. Read the rest of this entry »

Object-oriented programming is largely about the ability to hide what’s not important to the user and to highlight what is. PHP 5 offers standardized means for specifying the variety of property scopes typically offered by full-featured OO languages. Read the rest of this entry »

With mainstream Microsoft support of SQL Server 2000 ending on April 8, 2008, the importance of SQL Server 2005 continues to increase. Watching job advertisements, I’m seeing more and more job openings for database administrators and database developers, and an increase in SQL Server 2005 listed in the desired skills set.As the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 market share grows, so does the demand for qualified
DBMS experts to develop and maintain complex databases. Certifications are an ideal way to demonstrate knowledge and mastery of any product, including SQL Server 2005, and often certifications open up new doors and opportunities.Whether you’re trying to learn SQL Server from scratch, or upgrade your skills from SQL Server 2000, pursuing the MCITP certification is a great path to guide your studies. I’ve earned several certifications from Microsoft and I’ve found that by pursuing certifications, I’m able to learn a good mix of what’s needed on the job and what Microsoft considers significant new enhancements to a product. While this book will guide your studies to help you prepare for the MCITP certification, you’ll also learn many job skills that can help you shine as a database developer. Most great programming books sway far more toward the realm of the practical than of the academic. Although I have no illusions regarding my place among the great technical authors of our time, it is always my goal to write with this point in mind, producing material that you can apply to your own situation. Given the size of this book, it’s probably apparent that I attempted to squeeze out every last drop of such practicality from the subject matter. That said, if you’re interested in gaining practical and comprehensive insight into the PHP programming language and MySQL database server, and how these prominent technologies can be used together to create dynamic, database-driven Web applications, this book is for you.The feverish work of the respective PHP and MySQL communities prompted this
new edition, and with it considerable changes over the previous edition. In addition to updating the material to reflect features found in PHP 6 and the latest MySQL releases, two new chapters have been added. Read the rest of this entry »

Mastering CSS with DreamWeaver CS3

Adobe Dreamweaver (DW) is the leading web authoring tool on the market; Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the recommended method of separating presentation from content to make site upkeep simpler and faster, as well as friendlier to search engines. Yet it’s a common misconception that it’s tough to use Dreamweaver to build accessible, standards-compliant page layouts using CSS. We’re here to show you how easy it really is. Who are we? Greg is the Group Manager, Creative Solutions Evangelism at Adobe and has been involved with Dreamweaver since version two. He demos and teaches it weekly, including its CSS capabilities. Stephanie codes CSS for a living as a consultant and trains corporate web departments in CSS techniques, best practices and web standards. She’s the co-lead of the Adobe Task Force for WaSP (formerly the Dreamweaver Task Force) and wrote the CSS layouts in Dreamweaver CS3 under contract from Adobe. We wrote this book because we felt our combined knowledge about Dreamweaver and CSS could help you, our reader, grasp these tools in combination—the way we use them every day. And we wanted the opportunity to really discuss the CSS layouts contained in Dreamweaver CS3, showing you how to use, extend and really put them to work. Read the rest of this entry »

PHP and MySql Create-Modify-Reuse

I ’ m especially amazed at how the Internet has grown and evolved over the past decade or so. It has
grown from a collection of static text documents connected by a few hyperlinks to a platform for
delivering rich, distributed applications. And when it comes time to develop these web – based
applications, many programmers are choosing PHP and MySQL.
In this book, I present basic code for 12 PHP – powered projects that you can use and extend however you
wish. I have tried to write them so the code can be easily reused in future applications, but in some
instances the entire application can be reused as well!
I ’ ve enjoyed the opportunity to write and share with you this information and I hope you have just as
much fun reading it and learning from it. More importantly, I hope you find good, practical uses for the

projects found within this book. Read the rest of this entry »
